Here is a poem I wrote after spending a few days camping in the desert in 1997 at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

The Rocks of This Desert

The rocks are animals
A giant turtle head with open mouth and sharp beak
A pig, fat, on a ridge top
A hippo, half submerged in the coarse sand

The rocks are atmosphere
Places of sunlight, and shadow
Damp chill in morning
Dry warmth in evening

The rocks are shelter
A nook for a fern, a surface for lichen
A crack for a lizard, a slant for pictographs
Barriers - to the scented wind

The rocks are time
Witness to the seasons
Witness to the cycles of plants and animals
Witness to our footsteps

The rocks are danger
Slowly they shift
Slowly they split
Quickly they fall and crush

- - -

In the high valley is a table rock
The morteros beckon in the deep silence
My hand feels the round smooth marks of The People
The rocks of this desert

Now... a stone holds my flapping tarp
And with stone I pound a stake
The stone feels my touch
And I do not throw it when finished, no, I set it down

Here's another poem. At 2400 Kettner Boulevard, in San Diego, CA is a building with several art galleries and artist's studios. The building is in the path of the San Diego International - Lindbergh Field Airport approach. About every five minutes, a plane will come, the noise is incredible, the huge plane screams in the sky, passing just overhead at fantastic speed. I've often thought about the total obliteration one would cause if it slammed into the building.

Sky Over Kettner Boulevard

In the distant sight -
A light -
Some slight movement -
Am I right? -
Floating -
Trailing white

A sound. A shape. Enlarging. HUGE!

Descending massive metal black swan
Thundering interruption
Canceling conversation
Bird eating engines
Sky searing exhaust
Blurry air slurry

Lord of the winged world!

The airport awaits your arrival
