A Wedding Reception puzzle is designed to replace or compliment a "wedding guestbook": Guests sign the backs of the puzzle pieces!
How do Wedding Reception puzzles work?
There are several ways.
1) By far the best way is to have two helpers, perhaps "flower girls", administer the signing of the pieces. As each guest arrives at the Wedding Reception area, the first helper takes a piece from the initially assembled puzzle laying on a table by the entrance to the Reception area and presents it to the guest. The guest or guest couple signs the piece or writes best wishes as desired. The piece is then given to a second helper who perhaps is seated at a second table next to the first table, who then assembles the pieces as they arrive, on the surface of the second table.
2) Another method is to have the pieces distributed at place settings within the reception area. The pieces are signed and collected during the course of the meal and then assembled. The problem with this method is that without "flower girl" helpers keenly watching over the pieces, pieces may become lost; drinks may be spilled on them.
3) The worst way is to mail out the pieces with the Wedding Reception invitations. Inevitably, some intended guests will have other plans and will not show up at your Wedding Reception, or maybe they will show up but they will forget the puzzle pieces!
Sharpie Fine Point permanent ink pens are fine for signing the backs of the pieces.
For Wedding Reception puzzles, I recommend fairly large sized pieces, so that there will be enough room for writing messages on the back of each piece. Wedding Reception puzzles with 30 to 40 pieces usually have pieces around 4 square inches in size, puzzles with over 150 pieces usually have pieces around 2.5 square inches in size. As some guest couples may sign the same piece, the total number of pieces required may be less than the expected number of quests. Take the number of guests you expect and multiply by 80% to come up with the number of pieces.
