Puzzle 703 - The Colorful Owl
From a K. Chin acrylic painting in my collection

Puzzle 703 - Figural

As it happened (from my Journal archives)

February 26, 2007

Monday 9:30 pm - With just two days left in February I must get going on #703 tomorrow. Will be a picture of the K. Chin owl painting - actually a painted cutout of fabric glued onto a piece of Masonite and then painted in either oil or acrylic. Will mount tomorrow and start cutting.

Tuesday 5:11 pm - While world stock markets panicked I worked on #703 today, Colorful Owl. I decided due to the shortage in remaining time, to cut the puzzle in all Long Round, not Creative. I also upped the estimated piece count to around 350. I mounted #703 in the morning and started cutting later; I cut around 180 pieces and will cut the remainder tomorrow, cutting going well. There were be one figural in the puzzle, a dancer.

Wednesday 5:14 pm - I finished The Colorful Owl puzzle and just launched the auction. As usual I'm running late for a dance class, I'll have a picture here and the the rest of this website updated regarding the auction, late tonight.

From the auction description:

This puzzle features a print I made using archival inks from a scan of a fabric painting by the late K. Chin, an artist I frequently feature in the Project. The name "The Colorful Owl" is my name, the painting did not have a name. I purchased the painting in November, 2006 along with the painting I featured in last month's auction. The painting is about 9" by 12". I increased the size slightly and cropped a very little bit from the discolored edges. The painting was done on fabric cut in the shape of an owl and glued to Masonite which was painted white. The actual print used for the puzzle shows more of this detail than seen here.

K. Chin painted quite a few Owl paintings and had some prints of his owl paintings massed produced. The work featured here was derived from the only "fabric owl" painting of his that I know about.

This puzzle was cut in my Long Curl cutting style and includes my standard signature piece (signed, dated and numbered on the back) and a second piece (the Dancer figural) marked on the back indicating the puzzle belongs to the 100 Puzzles Project. I like dancing and in the past year or so, I have occasionally include dance related figurals in my puzzles.

I this puzzle will be somewhat of a challenge to put together!
